WinterSolstice Challenge

Experience the Winter Solstice Challenge, an exhilarating running event hosted by Essex Wildlife Trust near Colchester on Abberton Reservoir. Taking place on December 20, 2026, this unique race offers runners the chance to embrace one of the shortest days of the year with a scenic off-road course around Abberton Reservoir.
The day begins at 10am and concludes at 3pm, allowing participants ample time to explore their endurance limits on a loop that totals just over 5 kilometers per lap. The terrain is varied, featuring muddy paths through stunning natural scenery, providing both challenge and beauty for runners of all levels. Each lap starts and finishes at the Abberton Reservoir Visitors Centre, where you can enjoy frequent pit stops with free refreshments.
Whether you aim to complete a single hour or push yourself towards marathon distance over six hours, this event caters to every runner's ambition. The Visitor Center will be open throughout the day for friends and family to cheer on participants while enjoying refreshments from their own menu.
