The Wheatsheaf 5km charity trail run

About the Event

Experience an exhilarating night run through the serene countryside near Writtle, where headtorches illuminate your path and the camaraderie of fellow runners keeps spirits high. This unique 10-kilometer route is not only designed to challenge you but also serves a noble cause by raising funds for Whizz Kidz charity.
Your entry fee includes a contribution of £2 directly towards this worthy cause, with additional personal donations encouraged through Clare Lawrence's JustGiving page as she trains for her first marathon. Join the movement and support someone making a difference in children’s lives.
For those who aren’t members of TRA/UKA, there is an extra charge of £2 to cover administrative costs. Parking is available at the public car park by the duck ponds on the opposite side of the village green; it's just a 5-minute walk from there to the race venue. Public transport options are limited, so consider cycling and locking your bike in the pub’s beer garden.
The route itself is self-guided with minimal signage along the way, emphasizing reliance on personal navigation skills and equipment such as headtorches and GPS devices. A downloadable GPX file will be sent a couple of days before the event to help you track your progress accurately. In case you need company or assistance during the run, there's a tail runner available whose contact details are provided in the narrative.
To ensure safety and comfort, bring high-visibility clothing and waterproof gear if necessary. Warm attire is also recommended for post-run refreshments in the partially covered beer garden area of the pub at the finish line. Remember to keep your surroundings clean by not tracking mud into the venue.
Race numbers will be distributed starting from 18:00 near the start location, which is a short walk away and marked for mass departure at 18:30 sharp. Upon crossing the finish line, make sure to register with our timer before heading over to collect your drink of choice—be it beer, wine, soft drinks, or hot beverages—from the pub’s bar.
This event promises an unforgettable blend of challenge, charity support, and community spirit under the stars. Don't miss out on this opportunity to contribute positively while enjoying a unique running experience.
Join us for an evening filled with adventure and goodwill!

Scenic view of

Writtle is a village and civil parish in the Chelmsford district of Essex, England. It lies 2 miles (3.2 km) west of the centre of Chelmsford. It has a traditional village green complete with duck pond and a Norman church, and was once described as "one of the loveliest villages in England, with a ravishing variety of ancient cottages". The village is now home to Writtle University College, one of the UK's oldest and largest land-based colleges and a partner institution of the University of Essex, the grounds of which once housed a Royal hunting lodge, later the possession of the De Brus and De Bohun families. At the 2021 census the parish had a population of 5,328.
