In 2027, runners are invited back to The Flitch Way in Rayne for the ninth anniversary of H&T's inaugural race. This year’s event offers five unique entry options: a marathon, a half marathon, and three shorter distances—5km, 10km, and a 6-hour timed challenge. The route winds through Essex countryside along the historic Bishops Stortford to Braintree Branch line track, now transformed into an idyllic trail for runners. Spanning approximately 24 kilometers (15 miles), The Flitch Way is lined with scenic views of wildlife-rich landscapes and remnants of railway history. Participants can choose from two marked courses, each offering a loop of about 5.3km that they may run in either direction or alternate between the loops to create longer distances like 10km and half marathon lengths. Each lap includes an aid station stocked with flapjacks, fruit, nuts, water, and squash, ensuring runners can fuel up without carrying extra weight. A highlight of this year’s event is the opportunity for participants to select a bespoke H&T medal from previous races—a coveted prize that adds a personal touch to every runner's achievement. The race day also features a cupless initiative aimed at reducing plastic waste; runners are encouraged to bring their own reusable containers for drinks and refreshments. The Flitch Way offers mostly undulating terrain with some flat sections, providing a challenging yet enjoyable course experience. Runners can expect smooth hard-packed trails throughout the route, making it ideal for various distances from 5km up to marathon length. Race day starts at Rayne Station on New Road in Braintree CM77 6RX, where parking is limited but additional spots are available nearby. All runners should be mindful of maintaining a clean and responsible presence along The Flitch Way, ensuring the venue remains welcoming for future events. Join us for an unforgettable running experience that celebrates both nature and history, catering to all levels of ability with its varied distances and supportive race environment.
