Immerse yourself in the festive spirit with the 8th edition of the Reindeer Run, an annual race that promises adventure through Essex's picturesque countryside. Held just before Christmas, runners can choose from various distances: 5km, 10km, half marathon, full marathon, and a challenging 6-hour endurance event. The route follows The Flitch Way, a historic trail stretching for 15 miles between Braintree and Bishops Stortford. Originally the site of a single-track railway line that operated from 1869 to 1969, this path now serves as an important wildlife corridor and offers runners serene views of rolling hills and lush greenery. The course is traffic-free and mostly undulating with some flat sections, providing ideal conditions for both speed and endurance training. Runners can complete multiple laps on the hard-packed trail, each covering 5.3 kilometers. This layout allows participants to tackle half marathon distance by completing four loops or a full marathon in eight rounds. A key feature of this event is its aid station system. Positioned at the end of every lap, these stations offer runners essential hydration and nutrition without the need for carrying supplies throughout their run. Participants can leave personal bags with specific items to replenish themselves as they see fit. The organizers provide flapjacks, fruit, nuts, water, and squash to cater to various needs. To reduce plastic waste on race day, this year’s Reindeer Run is a cupless event. Instead of disposable cups, runners are encouraged to bring their own reusable containers for drinks at the aid stations. For those who prefer not to carry additional items, Hydrapak Speedcups can be purchased as part of registration or on-site. The race starts and finishes outside The Booking Hall Café in Rayne Station, with limited parking available nearby. Additional spaces are provided along New Road near the Flitch Way entrance. Runners should adhere strictly to local regulations regarding littering; bins will be placed at aid stations for proper disposal. This event is UKA Affiliated Member & Race Permit issued by TRA and a 100 Club qualifying race, making it ideal for runners of all abilities seeking an unforgettable experience in the heart of Essex. Join us this holiday season to celebrate running on one of the region’s most scenic trails!
