Black Lung Ultramarathon

The 2027 Black Lung Ultra Marathon returns for its fourth year on September 11, offering runners an unforgettable journey through the stunning Rocky Mountains. Set against the backdrop of Nordegg, Alberta, this historic mining town invites athletes to explore its rich past and scenic landscapes over a challenging 62km course.
The race is structured in three legs that start and finish at the same spot, creating a vibrant atmosphere as runners loop back for each stage. The first leg, "Coliseum Mountain," challenges participants with a technical climb up one of Nordegg’s renowned peaks, featuring steep ascents, rocky descents, and even a short ladder to cross a cliff face. With an elevation gain of 1078 meters, this initial stretch sets the tone for what lies ahead.
Leg two, "For the 29 in the Mine," commemorates the tragic loss of miners from Nordegg's history. Runners will start and finish in town but venture out to ascend and descend Nordegg Mountain via single-track trails before returning along a historic rail trail.
The final leg, "Collieries Closer," offers a gentler route through multi-use trails east of the town, leading participants past historical landmarks like the Colliery site. This section balances elevation gains with a rewarding descent back into Nordegg’s charming center.
Race day will see food trucks and beer gardens at the start/finish area for spectators and crew members to enjoy while cheering on their runners. The event promises an immersive experience that combines physical challenge, historical significance, and community spirit in one of Canada's most picturesque settings.
