Dive into the crystalline waters of Mahogany Lake for an exhilarating open water swim experience at the "Mahogany Beach to Beach" race. This 1.2km course, situated along the serene shores between two main beaches within Calgary’s vibrant Mahogany community, offers a unique blend of scenic beauty and competitive spirit. Participants start their journey from one sandy beach, swimming through clear waters that are both inviting and challenging. The route is marked by buoys to guide swimmers as they navigate towards the finish line at the opposite shore. Lifeguards and safety kayaks ensure every swimmer’s well-being throughout this exciting event. The atmosphere around Mahogany Lake is electric with enthusiastic support from local residents, making it an ideal environment for both novice open water enthusiasts and seasoned racers to showcase their skills. The average completion time hovers around 22 minutes, but elite swimmers can dash across the finish line in as little as ten minutes, setting a high bar for speed. Competitors must be at least 10 years old on race day with no upper age limit set, and are encouraged to have confidence swimming up to 1500m in pool conditions. While wetsuits aren’t mandatory, many swimmers opt for them due to the water's temperature, enhancing both warmth and buoyancy. Race day logistics include a pre-determined walk from Main Beach to West Beach (located at 10 Mahogany Blvd SE) where athletes will start their swim. Athletes should plan accordingly as parking is only available at Main Beach; however, drop-offs are permitted at the starting point. Participants receive a bag for items they wish to leave behind before beginning. Awards are given out in various categories including top male and female swimmers across different age brackets (10-14 years, 15-19 years, 20-29 years, etc.), as well as the prestigious "King" and "Queen of Mahogany," reserved for residents who demonstrate exceptional speed on race day. Strict rules are in place to ensure fair play: swimmers must wear designated swim caps, follow wave starts based on age groups, and adhere strictly to safety guidelines. Spectators cannot join from kayaks or paddleboards but will be present along the shorelines cheering participants onward. The event takes place on Saturday, August 7th at Mahogany Beach Club (29 Masters Park SE), with pre-race activities beginning early in the morning for package pick-up and timing chip distribution. The actual race starts promptly from West Beach following a series of age-specific waves that cater to all levels of experience. Join fellow swimmers as they dive into this unforgettable aquatic adventure, celebrating lake life while pushing personal limits against breathtaking backdrops.
