UK Wife Carrying Race

The course is a challenging yet exhilarating 'out-and-back' route spanning 380 meters along the steep slopes of The Nower hill in Dorking, featuring a steady ascent and descent of about 15 meters. This terrain makes for an intense physical test as you navigate with your partner over obstacles and through water hazards.
Participants don't need to bring their own wife; any willing adult female will do—friends, siblings, or romantic partners are all welcome. The 'wife' must weigh at least 50kg, which is verified before the race starts. If a participant falls short of this weight requirement, they can compensate by carrying additional gear like tins filled with flour or water.
Competitors have several carry options to choose from: bridal style, piggyback, shoulder ride, fireman's hold (across shoulders), and more daring holds such as the Estonian Hold where the wife hangs upside-down on her partner’s back. All those being carried must wear helmets for safety.
The race is a spectacle of creativity and camaraderie, with entrants encouraged to dress up in elaborate costumes for an added flair that could earn them special prizes like best fancy dress or most unique outfit. Spectators can join the fun by bringing water pistols and buckets to participate in the 'Splash Zone,' adding an extra layer of excitement during the return leg.
Winners receive a barrel of local ale (worth £150) along with commemorative medals, while first-place British finishers get a £250 stipend towards expenses for representing Britain at the World Wife Carrying Championships in Finland. All participants are rewarded with personalized race numbers and engraved wooden coasters from this memorable event.
