The Billing Trail Race

About the Event

Step into the heart of winter with The Billing race, an unapologetic celebration of grit and determination. This 14km trail run through Yorkshire's frosty landscapes is not for the faint-hearted but offers runners a unique challenge that tests both body and spirit.
The race begins at Rawdon Cricket Club in Leeds on a crisp February day before immediately tackling The Billing hill, an early climb that sets the tone for what lies ahead. After cresting this initial obstacle, participants navigate through Yeadon's quieter streets before venturing onto the perimeter of Leeds Bradford Airport—a seldom-seen stretch of land where runners can soak up panoramic views and enjoy a lap around its no man’s land.
The second ascent of The Billing is perhaps the most memorable part of the course. As you climb again, the cold air cuts through your lungs, but it's here that you'll find camaraderie among fellow competitors pushing each other to keep going despite the harsh conditions.
Trail shoes are a must for this race as the terrain includes fields and public footpaths, ensuring every step is deliberate and challenging. The course itself is fully marked, providing clear guidance through potentially tricky areas, but it’s up to you to navigate these winter landscapes with care.
While there's no official water station along the route, participants are encouraged to bring their own hydration packs or bottles. Race HQ at Rawdon Cricket Club offers essential facilities such as toilets and bag storage, ensuring a comfortable start and finish experience.
Entry is limited to 100 runners aged 18 years and over, so early registration is advised for this exclusive event. The race starts promptly at midday after an hour of pre-race preparations that begin at 11:00 AM, providing ample time to warm up before the challenge begins.
For those interested in souvenirs from their hard-earned run, optional extras like medals and t-shirts can be added during registration. However, these items are limited and not guaranteed on race day, so it's best to secure them ahead of time if desired. Alternatively, runners have the opportunity to contribute to a 'Trees not Tees' initiative by making a donation that will see trees planted in their honor.
No muddy boots allowed inside Race HQ—so be sure to bring spare shoes and clothing for changing upon arrival or after completing your run. A windproof or waterproof jacket is also mandatory, ensuring you're prepared for any winter weather conditions thrown at you during the race.
The Billing isn't just a race; it's an experience that embraces the essence of British winters in all their challenging glory. Join us and become part of this memorable event where every step taken on The Billing hill will be etched into your memory as one of those rare moments when winter’s chill turns to warmth within you.
