Hartsop Hop

About the Event

The Hartsop Hop, now in its third year, is an adventurous mountain race that challenges runners with strategic route choices and varied terrain across 19.5 kilometers (12.15 miles) of rugged Cumbrian landscape. The total elevation gain stands at a formidable 1370 meters (4495 feet), making it a test for even the most experienced trail runners.
The race begins in the tranquil setting of sheep pens above Hartsop, where participants face their first decision: which route to take towards Rest Dodd and the initial checkpoint. From there, competitors navigate through challenging terrain northeast of Rampsgill Head toward CP2 on High Raise col, a crucial cut-off point that must be reached within 70 minutes under strict marshal supervision.
A steep descent follows, leading runners down to Kidsty Howes before plunging further into Haweswater and climbing up The Rigg for the third checkpoint. This section offers minimal respite as it transitions directly into another climb through Nan Bield Pass, a grueling ascent that rewards those who can maintain their pace despite fatigue.
The route then leads to Lingmell End (CP4), where runners must navigate carefully to avoid retracing steps from previous races like the Kentmere Horseshoe. The final leg sees participants approaching Gray Crag for CP5 with renewed determination, knowing they are in sight of the finish line yet still facing a steep descent that requires caution and skill.
As tired legs test their limits on this last stretch, runners can choose between taking an adventurous direct route or opting for a safer path around outcrops at 500 meters. The race concludes back where it began, with participants crossing the finishing line amidst the serene setting of Hartsop sheep pens.
The Hartsop Hop is not just about reaching the finish; it's about making smart decisions and pushing through challenging terrain to achieve personal bests in this scenic yet demanding landscape.
