Whitbarrow Cumbrian Galoppen

Welcome to Whitbarrow Scar for the concluding leg of the 2026 Cumbria Galoppen series, an orienteering event set against the dramatic backdrop of limestone cliffs and open fell. This challenging terrain offers both navigational puzzles and physical tests that are emblematic of Lakeland's diverse landscapes.
The event caters to all skill levels with a range of courses designed for beginners through experienced orienteers. Notably, there is a Red course ideal for fell runners looking to hone their navigation skills in rugged conditions. Participants should be aware that non-members of British Orienteering are not covered by public liability insurance and take part at their own risk.
Parking is available along the old A590 road near Whitbarrow Scar (W3W: /// barstool.extremely.requires, Grid Ref SD 463 851). Registration takes place on your way to the start area, with a walk of up to 20 minutes from parking. The event starts between 10:30 and 12:00, offering both low (Yellow & Orange) and high elevation (other courses) starting points.
The finish line is shared by all participants, located approximately 30 minutes downhill from the start area. Along the way to higher-start locations, a clothing dump point offers convenience for runners. Port-a-loos are available near registration, ensuring basic amenities throughout your race day experience.
Safety measures include mandatory kit requirements such as a whistle and possibly full waterproof gear depending on weather conditions. Courses Short Blue and above feature safety controls that must be physically punched during the event to ensure participant well-being.
Entry fees vary by age group, with discounts for helpers who offer their support in advance. For more information or assistance, contact Rebecca Rowe at SROC via email.
