Great Hucklow Fell Race

About the Event

The Great Hucklow Fell Race is an enduring community tradition that has been captivating runners since time immemorial. Nestled in the heart of Derbyshire’s picturesque countryside, this 10km (6-mile) course offers a challenging and varied terrain with approximately 340 meters (1,000 feet) of ascent.
Registration begins at 9:30 am, providing ample opportunity for participants to collect their race numbers before the start time of 11:00 am. While pre-registration is encouraged, on-site entry remains an option for those who missed out online, with fees ranging from £9 to £10 (non-FRA).
The route itself is a true test of endurance and agility, weaving through private lands that only grant permission during the race morning. The course begins with a gentle downhill stretch through Hucklow village before transitioning into more rugged terrain. Runners will encounter an initial climb followed by a descent over rough ground to a small reservoir.
From there, the challenge intensifies as runners ascend towards Abney Moor and its highest point, passing the iconic Abney Moor trig point on Durham Edge where they can legally "bag" a unique private landmark known locally as 'Ethel'. The route then descends into Bretton Clough, notorious for its muddy terrain and challenging footing. This section is sure to leave runners’ shoes soaked but offers breathtaking views of the surrounding hills.
After navigating through the bumps and hillocks of the clough, participants will climb out towards Abney Grange before a final push over fields leads them back into woodland where they’ll encounter slippy gravel on steep tarmac near the finish line. The race concludes at Hucklow School, mirroring its origins as an event deeply rooted in community spirit.
Volunteers are integral to ensuring the smooth operation of this beloved local tradition, contributing their time and effort across various roles from registration and results management to providing essential refreshments post-race. Additionally, proceeds from entry fees support numerous good causes within the community year after year.
For more detailed information on travel arrangements, parking facilities, and other logistics, be sure to visit the official website of The Great Hucklow Fell Race.
This event is not just a race; it’s an experience that celebrates the beauty and challenge of the British countryside.
