The Grand Canal Canter offers runners of all levels an invigorating journey along the picturesque Grand Western Canal in Tiverton, Mid Devon. The race features four distinct distances: Marathon (26.2 miles), 20 Miler (20 miles), Half Marathon (13.1 miles), and a 10k run. The event begins at Tiverton Canal Basin with runners following the canal paths for most of their journey, offering stunning views of the surrounding countryside. The course is known for its flat terrain and fast times due to hard-packed gravel paths that provide excellent traction and speed. For those tackling the Marathon or 20 Miler, you will turn back near Burlsecombe after covering approximately half the distance before heading out again on a looped route that mirrors the first leg. The Half Marathon runners enjoy scenic views as they pass through Sampford Peverel while the 10k course turns at Tiverton Bridge Car Park. Runners can expect minimal elevation gain, with around 90 feet of ascent for the Half Marathon and approximately 150 to 180 feet for both the 20 Miler and Marathon. This makes it an ideal race for those looking to achieve personal bests on a smooth course. Participants will find water containers placed every three miles along the route, allowing them to refill their own reusable bottles or cups as they progress through the scenic canal landscape. It's important that all runners bring their own hydration solution in line with the event’s cupless policy, which aims to reduce waste and promote environmental responsibility. All finishers will receive a bespoke "Grand Canal Canter" medal commemorating their achievement on this unique course. Optional event t-shirts can be purchased during registration for £15.
