Frozen Chosin Challenge

About the Event

The Frozen Chosin Challenge, held annually at Johnson Shut-Ins State Park near Middle Brook, Missouri, commemorates the bravery and resilience displayed by U.S. Marines during one of the most grueling battles of the Korean War: The Battle of Chosin Reservoir. This three-day event honors "the Chosin Few," service members who fought in harsh winter conditions from November 27 to December 13, 1950.
Participants can choose between two challenging courses and a shorter hike:
The Chosin Challenge is a rigorous 40-mile trek over three days and two nights. Starting on December 4th at Johnson Shut-Ins State Park Campground, participants will traverse ancient mountains with sweeping vistas, glades, and rugged trails along the Goggin Mountain section of the Ozark Trail. The course includes fording the Black River, ascending Taum Sauk Mountain (Missouri's highest point), and descending to complete a 17-mile loop back at Johnson Shut-Ins State Park by December 6th.
The Devil Dog Challenge is a two-day, one-night event that covers 17 miles. It begins on December 5th from the same trailhead as the Chosin Challenge but with fewer total miles and no overnight camping required. Participants will experience similar terrain features, including steep ascents and river crossings.
Both events emphasize teamwork and camaraderie among participants who face extreme winter conditions reminiscent of those endured by U.S. forces during their 78-mile fighting withdrawal in temperatures as low as -35°F. Each team member must be at least 15 years old and hike with a parent or guardian if under 18.
Upon completion, all participants receive commemorative coins and T-shirts along with certificates recognizing their achievement. The event not only honors the past but also raises funds for the Missouri Korean War Veterans Memorial to ensure that this pivotal chapter in history is never forgotten.
