In its latest iteration, the Camuplodunum returns as an epic self-navigation adventure set against the backdrop of Colchester's rich history. Originating from Derek Keeble’s vision back in 1974 and evolving to a marathon distance today, this event offers runners a unique journey around the town that once thrived under Roman rule. Scheduled for 2026, the Camuplodunum spans an impressive 28.6 miles, weaving through diverse landscapes including fields, woodlands, sea walls, ancient earthworks, and riverside paths, alongside urban sections that showcase Colchester's modern charm. The route is meticulously designed to provide a challenging yet rewarding experience for runners of all levels. Aid stations are strategically placed every 10 kilometers along the course, ensuring participants have access to essential supplies throughout their journey. Additionally, each runner will receive a .gpx file to assist with navigation and ensure they stay on track during this self-guided adventure. The event kicks off at Bannatyne Gym & Spa in Kingsford Park (Layer Rd, Colchester CO2 0HS), where ample free parking is available for both runners and spectators. The venue boasts convenient facilities, including bars and restaurants that remain open throughout the day to cater to everyone's needs during this marathon-length event. In an effort to make participation more accessible, organizers have introduced a flexible entry fee structure. For £25, participants can enjoy the full experience without opting for additional items like medals or t-shirts at registration. However, those who wish to receive these memorabilia must select them ahead of time and pay accordingly; changes on race day will not be possible. To participate in this cupless event, runners are required to bring their own hydration cups. Collapsible speedcups can be purchased during the registration process or on race morning for £2.50 each, ensuring that all participants have a reliable way to stay hydrated throughout their run. The marathon begins at 8:30 AM with pre-race briefings starting at 8:15 AM. Registration opens promptly at 7:45 AM, allowing ample time for runners to prepare and familiarize themselves with the route details before embarking on this historic journey. With its blend of natural beauty, historical significance, and modern amenities, the Camuplodunum promises an unforgettable experience that honors Colchester's past while celebrating the spirit of endurance running today.
