Beyond the Lune, an initiative by Stu Taylor—a seasoned endurance athlete who has conquered some of the world’s most challenging multi-day events—offers runners two trail routes: a 10km and a 20km course through Kirkby Lonsdale and its surrounding parishes. These scenic trails are designed to cater to all levels, from social runners to competitive athletes looking for their next challenge. The event kicks off directly from The Barn in Kirkby Lonsdale, home to the renowned Kirkby Lonsdale Brewery and Coffee Roasters. Participants will start with a complimentary pastry and roasted coffee before heading out on their journey. Upon finishing, they are rewarded with a pint of one of the brewery’s finest beers. The 10km route takes runners through charming local footpaths and bridleways around Casterton and Bullpot, leading them to Devils Bridge via the scenic river path. This route culminates in an exhilarating sprint up the radical steps before crossing the finish line. For those seeking a longer adventure, the 20km option includes a tour of Brownthwaite Pike (also known as Bullpot). Runners will navigate steep fell roads and bridleways to reach the trig point at the summit. From there, they enjoy sweeping views over the Lune Valley and into the mountainous Lake District; on clear days, Blackpool Tower can be seen in the distance. The descent back to Devils Bridge offers a mix of challenging terrain before runners complete their journey along the river path. Both routes feature stunning landscapes, with picturesque villages, rolling hills, and dramatic cliffs providing an unforgettable backdrop for every step taken. Each event concludes at 1pm, ensuring that all participants have ample time to enjoy both the race and the surrounding beauty. Participants under 16 are not permitted to run alone; those aged 16-18 must be accompanied by a responsible adult throughout the course. Beyond the Lune invites runners of all abilities to experience the unique blend of natural beauty, challenging terrain, and local charm that Kirkby Lonsdale has to offer.
