About the Event

First held in 2024, AWAJI ISLAND TRAIL - The Legend of KUNIUMI reaches its third edition in 2026. The race aims to showcase Awaji Island, the island of Japanese creation myth, and to link trail runners with it. Staff are recruited from trail-running enthusiasts in and outside the prefecture, working with local people to energize the community, while the event helps develop a long trail as a lasting tourism asset. The route runs from beach to beach across the island. The long course covers 42 km with 2,200 m of cumulative climbing and 90% trail, passing hills with sea views and historic and cultural sites; a 23 km short course is also offered. A hot spring next to the finish venue allows runners to bathe right after the race instead of taking a bus while sweaty. The organizers go paperless and carry out trail conservation work as part of their push for a sustainable race.
