ZigZag - 2027 Great Barrow Challenge - Day 6

Immerse yourself in the scenic landscapes of Suffolk with the Great Barrow Challenge hosted by Zig Zag Running at the Suffolk Running Centre on Church Road, Bury St Edmunds (IP29 5AX). This ten-day running extravaganza offers a unique opportunity to test your limits across various distances: from a brisk 5k to an exhilarating ultra marathon. Each day presents its own set of challenges and routes.
On Day Six, runners will tackle the Golding Hills route, which features a challenging yet rewarding out-and-back loop totaling 10.5 kilometers (6.5 miles). The terrain is entirely road-based with modest climbs reaching up to 95 meters in elevation against a backdrop that dips down to around 65 meters.
For those taking on shorter distances:
- A 5k participant will head out to the designated turnpoint and return via the same route.
- Those aiming for a half marathon complete two loops of Golding Hills, while full marathons require four such circuits. Ultra runners have the option to extend their journey with either an additional loop or a trip to the 5k turnaround point.
The event's HQ serves as both your starting and finish line, equipped with essential hydration stations along the route. Participants will receive bespoke medals for each day’s completion, commemorating their achievement in style.
Preparation is key: bring reusable bottles or cups since the race has gone cupless to reduce waste. Additionally, ensure you leave pets and buggies at home as they are not permitted on this open-road course. For safety reasons, headphones aren’t allowed except for bone conduction models that keep runners aware of their surroundings.
Virtual entries are also available through Zig Zag Running’s website shop section, allowing those unable to join in person the chance to participate remotely and still receive a medal upon completion.
This event promises not just physical exertion but an engaging atmosphere with fellow athletes sharing your passion for endurance running. Whether you’re aiming for personal bests or simply enjoying the journey, every step on Golding Hills offers breathtaking views and memorable milestones.
