Meeting at Yamashina Station (JR and subway), runners start along city roads before heading into the mountains, following a stream and climbing steeply to the summit, then enjoying a long trail descent. About half the course is easy paved road, though the climbs and long descents are demanding, so steep sections are walked with breaks.
