Urolako Trena Maratoia 7K Legazpi-Zumarraga

The El Urolako Trena Marathon is set to make its debut as a unique addition to the calendar of popular races in Euskal Herria on February 20, 2027. This inaugural edition will feature three race distances: half marathon (21 kilometers), full marathon (42 kilometers), and a shorter 7-kilometer route. All participants will run along the restored Vía Verde del Urola, an old railway path that offers runners a blend of industrial heritage and natural beauty.
The half and full marathons begin in Zumarraga and wind through the picturesque valley of the River Urola before finishing in Azpeitia/Zumaia. The course follows the newly refurbished Vía Verde del Urola, which has been transformed into an accessible path for pedestrians and cyclists as well as runners, showcasing historical landmarks and industrial relics from a bygone era.
The 7-kilometer race starts in Legazpi and ends in Zumarraga, offering participants a taste of both the area's rich history and its stunning natural landscapes. This route also traces parts of Patricio Echeverría’s historic railway construction, providing runners with an immersive journey through time.
On this special day, commemorating 101 years since the inauguration of the Urola Railway in 2027, the event celebrates not only the race but also a significant milestone for local heritage and industrial history. Runners will have the unique opportunity to experience firsthand how transportation once connected the entire valley, while honoring its historical significance.
This inaugural edition promises an unforgettable blend of physical challenge and cultural immersion along the Vía Verde del Urola.
