Urolako Trena Maratoia 21K Zumarraga-Azpeitia

The Urolako Trena Marathon was established in 2026 with the goal of becoming a unique fixture on Euskal Herria's race calendar. For its second edition in February 2027, participants will have the opportunity to run either a half marathon (21 kilometers), a full marathon (42 kilometers), or a shorter 7-kilometer route through the scenic Vía Verde del Urola, an ancient railway path now converted into a pedestrian and cycling trail.
The race's most distinctive feature is its journey along Patricio Echeverría’s historic rail line. The half and full marathon routes will begin in Zumarraga and end in Azpeitia/Zumaia, tracing the course of the Urola River through lush green valleys and picturesque landscapes. This stretch celebrates both industrial heritage and natural beauty, with runners passing by remnants of old train stations and bridges.
The 7-kilometer race offers a more compact experience, starting in Legazpi and finishing in Zumarraga, allowing participants to enjoy segments of the Vía Verde that blend historical railway infrastructure with serene woodland paths. This route also highlights the rich industrial history along the Urola Valley, offering runners insights into the area's past as an important transportation hub.
On race day, February 21, 2027, there will be added significance as it marks exactly 101 years since the inauguration of the Urola Railway. This milestone promises a celebratory atmosphere that honors the railway’s legacy and its role in connecting communities across the valley. Runners are invited to experience not only the physical challenge but also the cultural richness embedded within this unique course.
