The Big Pilgrimage

The Big Pilgrimage is an extraordinary running experience that follows the historic 'Old Way' trail, stretching from Southampton to Canterbury. This mixed-terrain race offers both 15-mile and marathon distances, weaving through picturesque coastal paths and serene countryside trails.
For runners embarking on this journey, the adventure begins at Mayflower Park in Southampton. The route takes participants along the scenic coastline and inland tracks, offering stunning views of England's rich landscape. A unique highlight is a river crossing near Hamble foreshore where runners board one of several boats for a short ferry ride across the Hamble River to Warsash before continuing their run.
Throughout the course, pilgrims will encounter iconic landmarks such as Netley Castle and Abbey, Royal Victoria Country Park Chapel, and Titchfield Abbey. Each landmark features a collection point where participants receive stickers to decorate their race bibs, creating an interactive and memorable experience.
The 15-mile route concludes at the medieval ruins of Titchfield Abbey, while marathon runners push on to finish in the beautiful grounds of Boundary Oak School near Wickham. Both courses are marked with clear signage for navigation, but organizers recommend downloading a GPX file onto wearable devices as weather conditions can be unpredictable along this ancient trail.
Participants have the option to book pre-arranged coach transport from finishing locations back to Mayflower Park on race day, ensuring an easy start and finish experience. The event is carefully managed with staggered starts for safety reasons; marathon runners begin in two waves at 7:20 AM and 7:30 AM, while the 15-mile route sees three waves starting from 7:50 AM.
