Stan Bradshaw Pendle Round

About the Event

The Pendle Massif Challenge invites runners to explore one of Lancashire's lesser-trodden landscapes. This early spring race offers an exhilarating journey through the rugged terrain of the Pendle hills, featuring sections that are rarely seen on other race routes.
Runners can expect a varied and challenging course with steep climbs, grassy descents, and stretches of boggy moorland. The route is marked by both defined paths and areas where runners must navigate their way across open land. With some sections offering multiple options for navigation, the Pendle Massif Challenge provides an opportunity to test your skills in a dynamic environment.
The race's timing means that weather conditions can vary greatly from year to year, ranging from unseasonably warm days to snowy landscapes. This unpredictability adds another layer of excitement and challenge to the event, making each edition unique and memorable for participants.
To ensure safety, runners must adhere to strict kit requirements as per FRA rules: a full waterproof body cover, hat, gloves, map (available free on the Clayton Harriers website), compass, whistle, and emergency food. These provisions are essential given the unpredictable weather that can sometimes make visibility poor and terrain difficult.
Early start options for participants aged 70 or over are available upon request to accommodate those who prefer a cooler morning run. The race's checkpoints remain consistent from year to year, with exact locations clearly marked on the downloadable map provided by Clayton Harriers.
Starting outside Barley Village Hall, runners will pass through various landmarks such as Shelter beyond Trig Point and Scout Cairn before navigating challenging terrain like Calf Hill and Woodhouse brook-wall/stream. The race finishes back at the village hall where it all began, providing a satisfying loop that encapsulates the essence of Pendle’s diverse landscape.
For those looking to test their endurance on lesser-known trails while enjoying stunning early spring vistas, the Pendle Massif Challenge offers an unparalleled experience in one of England's most captivating natural settings.

Scenic view of

Burnley is a town in Lancashire, 30 miles north of Manchester. It's an industrial town, but it's proud of its many parks that have been awarded the Green Flag for excellence, and of Burnley Forest — great places for walking or cycling. The Singing Ringing Tree on Crown Point Moor is a piece of sound art made of galvanised steel pipes which make an incredible eerie noise in the wind. In 2021 Burnley had a population of 94,700.
