South Shields Landmark Challenge

The South Shields Landmark Challenge returns on December 27, 2026, offering teams an engaging blend of running, navigation, and exploration through the historic streets of South Shields. This year's edition promises fresh landmarks, exciting adventures, and a new commemorative medal for all participants.
Teams are encouraged to gather friends or colleagues and embark on this unique experience that celebrates both physical activity and local heritage. The event is designed not as a race but as an opportunity to explore the town’s rich history while enjoying festive cheer along the way. Participants can expect no set route, allowing flexibility in how they navigate from landmark to landmark.
The challenge covers approximately 10 miles, though specific distances may vary based on each team's chosen path and strategy for visiting landmarks. With a minimum of two runners per team and no upper limit on participants, this event caters to all levels of fitness enthusiasts, whether casual joggers or dedicated club members looking for something different.
Registration takes place at the Sanddancer Pub in South Shields from 8:15 am to 8:45 am, with a start time promptly at 9:00 am. Entry fees are £13 per runner, and teams must register by December 3rd, 2026, for medals to be ready on the day of the event.
Participants should prepare for variable winter conditions, including cold weather and potential wet or muddy terrain as they navigate through a mix of roads, grassy paths, and hilly areas. Dressing up in festive attire is highly encouraged to add an extra layer of fun and camaraderie among teams.
Prizes will be awarded to the first all-male team and the first all-female team on the day. All participants who complete the challenge will receive a specially designed South Shields Landmark Challenge medal, celebrating their achievement and contribution to this unique event.
