The 2027 New River Trail Races, hosted by SWVA Running since 2008, invites runners to explore the scenic beauty of Southwest Virginia's premier state park along the historic New River. This year’s edition features a full weekend of community racing across six distinct distances: 5K, 10K, 25K, 50K, 100K, and 100-mile races. The trail is renowned for its flat, fast course that consists entirely of dirt and crushed gravel. Ideal for first-time ultra finishers and personal record hunters alike, the route offers a smooth running experience without any mountain scrambles to challenge even novice runners. The atmosphere at these events is welcoming, with top-tier aid station support along the way. The race weekend kicks off on Thursday, April 8th, with packet pickup from 4:00 PM to 7:00 PM for participants in the 100-mile and 100K races. A course briefing at Fries Access follows at 6:00 PM that evening. On Friday, April 9th, headquarters and medical check-in open at 3:00 AM, with the start of the 100-mile and 100K races scheduled for 4:00 AM. Saturday, April 10th brings more excitement as packet pickup opens from 6:00 AM to 7:50 AM for those running in the 50k, 25k, and 10k events. The 50K and 25K races begin at 7:00 AM, followed by a community-friendly 10K run starting at 8:00 AM. A free, untimed 5K race starts promptly at 8:30 AM for those looking to enjoy the scenic trail without competing. No swag or finisher's medals are provided for this event. The official race finish and course cutoff time is set for 8:00 PM on April 10th, ensuring a full day of racing action. Participants in the longer distances—50K, 100K, and 100-mile races—are encouraged to bring drop bags containing essential gear such as headlamps or lights, water filters, emergency blankets, and reusable/collapsible cups due to the cup-less race policy. Parking is available across a grassy field with limited lighting. Runners should be mindful of road crossings where traffic has priority; law enforcement may assist at certain points but not throughout the entire route. Additionally, runners must respect other trail users such as cyclists, e-bikes, and horseback riders who share this open space. Awards will be presented to top finishers in various categories including 1st Overall Male, Female, Nonbinary, 2nd Overall Male, Female, Nonbinary, and 3rd Overall Male, Female, Nonbinary for the longer distances. All participants completing the 5K, 10k, 25k, or 50k will receive a finisher's medal.
