About the Event

Nestled between the Royal Natal National Park and the majestic Cathedral range, the small village of Mnweni offers runners an unforgettable adventure into one of South Africa's most awe-inspiring landscapes. Known as "the place of fingers" due to its dramatic rock formations, this area was once deemed remote and treacherous by seasoned mountaineers, with long, steep paths that challenge even the hardiest hikers.
Established in 2000 by trail-running visionaries Bruce Arnette and Mark Tannian, the Mnweni Trail Race has since become a beloved fixture among endurance athletes. The race now attracts up to 250 participants each year for its challenging course through the heart of the Drakensberg escarpment.
The flagship 40km route scales the rugged peaks to an elevation of 3000 meters, offering panoramic views that reward every step with breathtaking vistas. Shorter options include a scenic 20km trek and a picturesque 10km loop around the Mnweni Cultural Centre in the foothills, where runners can experience the rich cultural heritage of the region.
With unpredictable weather adding an extra layer of excitement to each race day, participants are treated to an intimate blend of natural beauty and historical significance. The event promises a true test for trail enthusiasts seeking both adventure and inspiration amidst the towering cliffs and verdant valleys of Mnweni.
Join us on April 10, 2027, as we celebrate another year in this legendary setting where every step is an exploration into South Africa's untamed wilderness.
