About the event

The Indian Ocean Marathon presents Durban’s newest running experience, transforming the Orcas ULTRA Marathon into an internationally recognized event along South Africa's stunning coastline. The race offers three distinct distances: the 50km Ultra, aimed at serious ultra-distance runners; the 30km Challenge for those seeking a middle-distance adventure; and the accessible 10km race open to all levels of participants.
Competitors start and finish on Sunkist Lawns opposite Moses Mabhida Stadium. Race pack collection is available Friday from 11am to 4pm, with Saturday hours extending until the same time for those unable to make it earlier. Early Bird and Standard entrants receive a custom race T-shirt and goodie bag, while Late registrants will not have access to these items.
The event attracts up to 5000 runners, immersing them in Durban's vibrant atmosphere as they run along the Indian Ocean coastline. With breathtaking views of the sea and city skyline, this is a unique opportunity for both local and international athletes to experience South Africa’s running culture in one of its most iconic settings.
The race promises an unforgettable day with scenic routes that highlight Durban’s beauty, making it a must-attend event for runners looking to challenge themselves while enjoying the coastal charm.

Scenic view of

Durban is the third-most populous city in South Africa, after Johannesburg and Cape Town, and the largest city in the province of KwaZulu-Natal. Situated on the east coast of South Africa, on the Natal Bay of the Indian Ocean, Durban is the busiest port city in sub-Saharan Africa and was formerly named Port Natal. North of the harbour and city centre lies the mouth of the Umgeni River; the flat city centre rises to the hills of the Berea on the west; and to the south, running along the coast, is the Bluff.
