Set against the rugged and breathtaking landscapes of southern Ardèche, La Néandertal is an exhilarating weekend event that combines sport and celebration. This unique gathering offers trail runners and mountain bikers alike the chance to challenge themselves on demanding courses while immersing in nature’s splendor.
The heart of the event features two main categories: Trail running and VTT (mountain biking). The trail race spans 27 kilometers with a cumulative elevation gain of 1,100 meters. This challenging course takes participants through diverse terrain including steep ascents and descents carved into limestone cliffs and garrigue scrubland. Competitors will find themselves climbing to the summit of Cime de la Dent de Rez at an altitude of 719 meters, where they are rewarded with a stunning panoramic view that stretches across the Cévennes mountains all the way to distant Alps.
For mountain bikers, La Néandertal offers equally demanding routes. The VTT race covers 41 kilometers and includes a staggering elevation gain of 1,400 meters. This route is designed for those who seek technical challenges and breathtaking scenery as they navigate through rocky paths and steep climbs characteristic of the Ardèche’s wild terrain.
In addition to these main events, La Néandertal also features shorter trail races (11 kilometers) and various non-chronometric VTT options catering to different levels of experience. There are also family-friendly VT'Trail activities for younger participants who wish to enjoy the event in a less competitive setting.
The race weekend is framed by an atmosphere that emphasizes respect for nature, fair play among competitors, and community spirit. Participants will find well-equipped support stations along both trail and VTT routes where they can hydrate and refuel during their journey.
La Néandertal not only serves as a sporting event but also supports local youth activities through proceeds from the race entry fees. The funds raised help finance cycling schools for young people, ensuring that future generations will have access to enriching sports programs at affordable rates.
