The Azpeitia Challenge, set to take place on May 8, 2027, is an exhilarating trail run that winds through the stunning Basque countryside. Participants will traverse rugged terrain, ascending and descending over 14 kilometers with a cumulative elevation gain of nearly 3,000 meters. The race begins in Azpeitia at an altitude of just 80 meters before climbing up to Xoxote peak at 912 meters.
The course features five aid stations providing essential hydration and nutrition along the way, ensuring runners can push their limits while staying fueled for this demanding route. Notable checkpoints include Larrume Txiki (340m) and Izarraizko Atea near Ikasberri, which serve as crucial points before reaching Xoxote.
As day turns to evening, competitors will experience a mix of challenging ascents and descents, culminating in the final push back down into Azpeitia. The race concludes with an impressive prize ceremony at 8 PM on Plaza Mayor where top finishers are awarded cash prizes ranging from €100 for third place up to €300 for first-place winners.
The event offers a unique opportunity not only to test personal limits but also to celebrate the rich local culture and cuisine of Azpeitia. Runners who complete within the 5-hour time limit will receive commemorative race gear, adding an extra layer of prestige to this already memorable experience.
