Hell Creek Half & 50k

The Hell Creek Half & 50k Presented by Ultraverse Supplements is set to take place on Saturday, August 21, 2027, offering runners the opportunity to explore and challenge themselves along the rugged yet runnable Switchgrass Mountain Bike Trail at Wilson State Park. This scenic course features breathtaking views of Wilson Lake and offers a mix of open terrain with minimal wooded areas.
For those participating in the half marathon, you'll embark on one loop that totals approximately 13 miles, starting off briefly on pavement before transitioning to the challenging trail. The 50k runners will tackle two loops: an initial 19-mile stretch followed by another lap around the half marathon course for a total distance of about 32 miles.
Both courses are rich in elevation changes with the half marathon boasting approximately 1,300 feet of gain and loss while the full 50k route accumulates roughly 3,000 feet. The trail is well-marked with ribbons, flags, and clear signage to guide runners through this epic terrain.
Aid stations are strategically placed along both routes at the start/finish line and near "Hell Hill," ensuring that participants have access to essential supplies such as water, Proxima C Endurance Fuel, typical ultra food items, and soda. Additional unmanned hydration points will be available for 50k runners around mile five and again on the Hell Creek Loop.
Participants are encouraged to arrive early for race day check-in: from 6:30 AM to 7:45 AM at the Switchgrass trailhead parking lot (GPS coordinates N38°54.965 W98°30.549). Early arrival is also possible on Friday evening between 6 PM and 7 PM.
The event prizes include custom Hell Creek dri-fit tank tops for all finishers, along with unique wooden medals for half marathon participants and a distinctive buckle for those completing the longer distance challenge. Additionally, top male and female runners in each category will be awarded special recognition.
This race serves as an excellent training ground for Ultraverse's September series, which features even more challenging distances like 20 miles, 100 kilometers, 100 miles, and a grueling Pure Hell 140-mile option. By participating in the Hell Creek Half & 50k, runners can secure their place to tackle these ambitious routes later in the year.
Remember that all participants must adhere to strict rules regarding pacers (none allowed), crew assistance limitations, and adherence to course markings and cutoff times of 9 hours for half marathoners and 9.5 hours for those taking on the full distance challenge. Littering or cutting trails will result in immediate disqualification.
