The Wheelbase Fred Whitton Challenge is a legendary cycling sportive that ranks among the most challenging one-day rides in the UK. Named after Fred Whitton, an ardent advocate for cycle sport in Cumbria and North Lancashire, this 112-mile route through the Lake District World Heritage Site offers breathtaking landscapes alongside grueling climbs.
Starting from Grasmere, riders conquer seven major passes: Kirkstone, Honister, Newlands, Whinlatter, Hardknott, Wrynose, and Blea Tarn. The course features a 30% gradient climb at the 98-mile mark, testing even the most seasoned cyclists. While elite racers may complete it in under six hours, many participants take over eleven hours to finish.
This annual event honors Fred Whitton's legacy by maintaining its status as "a challenge" rather than an easy ride. The Wheelbase Fred Whitton Challenge is not just a test of physical endurance but also a celebration of the spirit and camaraderie among cyclists who share a passion for conquering this iconic route through some of England’s most spectacular scenery.

- Special Charity, Overseas, Deferred entry / Volunteer entry: November 2nd, 2026
- General ballot places open: December 1st, 2026
- Ballot closes and results announced from December 14th to 20th, 2026
