Fred Whitton Challenge 2027 - BALLOT

The Wheelbase Fred Whitton Challenge is a grueling yet revered cycling event that draws cyclists from across the UK and beyond. Named after Fred Whitton, an esteemed advocate for cycle sport in Cumbria and North Lancashire, this charity ride honors his legacy by offering participants one of the most challenging routes in the country.
Spanning 112 miles through the picturesque Lake District—a UNESCO World Heritage Site—the route is known to test even the toughest cyclists. Riders start from Grasmere and face a series of formidable climbs including Kirkstone Pass, Honister, Newlands, Whinlatter, Hardknott, Wrynose, and Blea Tarn passes. The course features steep gradients, with one ascent boasting an astounding 30% incline near the 98-mile mark.
While elite cyclists may complete the route in under six hours, most participants take around eleven to twelve hours to finish, making it a true test of endurance and determination. Cyclists are drawn not only by the challenge but also by the breathtaking views of lakes, mountains, and rolling hills that make this ride an unforgettable experience for any cycling enthusiast.
Registration opens on November 2nd with special charity entry options, followed by general ballot entries from December 1st to 10th, culminating in a challenging day out in May.
