Winter on the Downs

Winter on the Downs offers runners an exhilarating challenge across three distinct distances: 50 kilometers, 55 miles, and 100 miles. All races take place along the scenic trails of East and West Sussex, starting and finishing at Plumpton Racecourse.
The event’s timing in winter brings a unique mix of conditions to the race day experience. Runners may encounter everything from bright, crisp days with clear blue skies to more challenging weather such as strong winds, rain, sleet, fog, freezing temperatures, and even snow. The eastern side of the South Downs, where much of this route lies, is known for its relatively dry climate compared to other parts of the United Kingdom.
The terrain itself offers a mix of runnable paths with excellent drainage, ensuring that despite occasional wet or muddy stretches, runners can maintain their pace throughout most sections. This makes Winter on the Downs an ideal event for those who enjoy testing themselves against varied and unpredictable weather conditions while navigating through some of England's most beautiful landscapes.
In addition to individual race entries, participants have the opportunity to take part in a new challenge called the South Downs Triple Crown starting from 2025. To earn this distinction, runners must complete three ultra-distance races within the same calendar year. There are several variations available for those interested in taking on multiple challenges across different distances.
