Urban Trail de Villeneuve lez Avignon

On January 23, 2027, runners will gather under the starlit sky of Villeneuve-lès-Avignon for an unforgettable night race through one of France's most historic towns. Facing Avignon across the Rhône River, this former royal town offers a unique blend of medieval charm and urban trail running.
The course starts at Place Charles David, lined with majestic plane trees, before ascending to Mont Andaon and its imposing Fort Saint-André. Here, runners will be treated to sweeping views of the Palais des Papes in Avignon below. The route then winds through Villeneuve's medieval heart—illuminated Gothic cloisters, ancient towers, and historic chapels punctuate each step.
The terrain is varied but navigable for all skill levels: short climbs alternate with cobbled descents, offering 60m of elevation gain over the first 5km, 180m on the 10km course, and a challenging 400m climb across 20 kilometers. Participants will face cool temperatures and might encounter the infamous mistral wind, which can either push you forward or remind you to stay prepared.
The event is more than just a race; it's an illuminated tour of Villeneuve-lès-Avignon’s heritage sites usually off-limits to the public. Runners are encouraged to wear headlamps and costumes for added fun, with prizes awarded for best attire. The festive atmosphere includes live DJs along parts of the route and enthusiastic encouragement from local firefighters.
For those looking to extend their weekend adventure, Villeneuve's Tavel vineyard offers a taste of the region’s renowned rosé wines, while Avignon itself boasts iconic landmarks like the Palais des Papes and remnants of the Pont Saint-Bénézet. Don't forget to try a papaline d'Avignon—a local chocolate delicacy filled with oregano liqueur—after crossing the finish line.
With its rich history and scenic routes, the Urban Trail de Villeneuve lez Avignon promises an unforgettable night run through one of France’s most captivating landscapes.
