Tough Track Mile

The Tough Track Mile returns to Winnipeg, Manitoba on Saturday, June 28th, offering a 5K for adults and a Kids K for younger runners in memory of David Tough.
Nestled within the scenic trails of Assiniboine Park, participants will experience an early morning start with temperatures around 17°C. The park's firm yet slightly soft surface ensures a challenging but manageable run under moderate UV conditions typical of mid-June mornings. Spectators can expect to see runners wind their way through picturesque landscapes, past the historic Forks Market and alongside Lake Winnipeg.
This event has been running since its inception in 2016, now firmly established as an annual tradition. Over the years, it has attracted over a thousand participants who come together not just for physical competition but also to support the David Tough Memorial Fund which provides scholarships and financial assistance to local students.
The race begins at Assiniboine Park's main entrance on Pembina Highway near Main Street, where runners will be greeted by the familiar sounds of birdsong and the rustling leaves. The 5K course is a loop that takes participants through diverse sections—from open fields to wooded trails—offering scenic views while maintaining a steady pace.
Atop the course, there are no official aid stations, but water points will be strategically placed at key intervals for those who need it. Runners can expect an elevation change of 50 meters over the full distance, with some slight inclines adding to the challenge. The race concludes back near the starting point in front of the Assiniboine Park Zoo.
Weather conditions on June 28th will see temperatures ranging from a low of around 13°C early morning and reaching up to 20°C by midday, with a UV index at moderate levels (5.6). The firm yet slightly soft trail surface may feel more comfortable for those dressed in appropriate footwear.
