The Gwyn Matthews’ Rhondda Rollercoaster, organized once again by South Wales LDWA, promises an exhilarating run through the rugged beauty of the Rhondda Valleys. Set to start from Trehafod Community Village Hall on a date yet to be announced in 2026, this event offers runners two challenging routes: a longer 26-mile trek and a more moderate 16-mile journey. The adventure begins with an invigorating climb through the dense forests of Mynydd y Glyn, waking up your legs and lungs for what’s to come. After crossing over Mynydd y Cymmer, runners on both routes will experience unique terrain as they diverge from each other. The 26-mile route takes participants onto moorland and through woods towards the glacial cwm of Bwlch y Clawdd, offering breathtaking views along the way before heading home via Ton Pentre and Ferndale. The shorter 16-mile course descends to Dinas where runners will face a sharp climb up towards Rhondda Golf Club. This route also rewards participants with stunning vistas over both Rhondda Valleys. Both routes eventually come together for one final leg, testing climbers as they make their way toward the iconic Tylorstown tip viewpoint before finishing back at the village hall. Throughout the event, runners will be treated to tea and toast at the start line, plus refreshments available along the route from indoor and outdoor checkpoints. A hearty meal awaits all participants upon completion of the race. Every finisher receives a certificate commemorating their achievement. Entries for this exciting adventure open on October 1st, 2026, but spaces are limited so it’s best to act quickly. The event runs between start times from 8am (for walkers) and 9am (for fast walkers and runners), with all participants needing to finish by 7:30pm. Join the Gwyn Matthews’ Rhondda Rollercoaster for an unforgettable day in South Wales, where natural beauty meets challenging terrain.
