The 2027 Peak Rail 7 - Runner versus Steam

On March 29, 2027, at 9:30 am, Matlock Athletic Club and Peak Rail invite runners to participate in the annual charity race known as "Runner versus Steam." This unique event challenges participants to outpace a heritage steam train that will travel from Rowsley South station to Matlock Riverside station and back along the scenic White Peak Loop Trail. The 7-mile course offers an exhilarating cat-and-mouse game, with runners initially being overtaken by the train only to pass it again at station stops before losing sight of it once more as it chugs ahead.
The race takes place in the picturesque Derbyshire Dales and is almost entirely off-road, providing a mix of challenging terrain that includes narrow footbridges and steep steps. Runners will enjoy close proximity to the Peak Rail track throughout much of their journey, offering supporters on board ample opportunities for photography as they cheer from the train.
Entry fees are £18 for those affiliated with UK Athletics or £20 unattached (both including booking fee), with a total limit of 240 participants. All runners will receive a race memento and can look forward to generous prizes across various age categories, including male and female overall winners as well as V40, V50, and V60+ divisions.
Supporters wishing to follow the event by rail should purchase their tickets in advance through Bookitzone; these are refundable until March 14th but cannot be refunded individually after that date. Post-race refreshments will be available at Rowsley South station's Northwood Buffet, where there is ample free parking.
While this race promises an exciting challenge for runners and a memorable experience for spectators alike, it’s important to note that the course is not suitable for wheelchair users or those accompanied by dogs due to public liability limitations. Additionally, while rail tickets are available alongside race entries, securing both does not guarantee entry into either event; participants must act quickly to ensure their places.
This year's proceeds will continue Matlock AC’s tradition of donating all remaining funds after costs have been covered to local charitable causes and community projects, having already contributed over £20,000 since the inception of this event.
