Sizzlin' in the Florida Sun: The 3rd Annual Sombrero Sizzler presented by Sombrero Running Events invites runners and ruckers alike to experience a unique endurance challenge on July 17, 2027. Set against the backdrop of Cecil Field, a former active military base now transformed into an inviting course, this event offers participants a choice between solo efforts or team relay options.
The race takes place on a pancake-flat and fast 1.25-mile loop that is mostly paved with asphalt and concrete, featuring just enough grass to add variety without altering the flat terrain significantly. The route winds through lush pine forests providing ample shade during the early morning hours, though runners should prepare for some stretches of direct sunlight as the day progresses.
Participants can choose from four race durations: 3, 6, 9, or 12 hours. For those opting to include weight in their challenge, ruckers are required to carry a minimum of 10 pounds for women and 20 pounds for men, adhering strictly to the honor system.
The pre-race setup begins at 6:00 am on July 17th with packet pickup available. A brief meeting takes place at 6:50 am before all races kick off promptly at 7:00 am from the main pavilion area. Parking is conveniently located along a road leading directly to the course, ensuring easy access throughout the event.
Aid stations are strategically placed near the start/finish line in the pavilion where participants can enjoy grilled breakfast foods and vegan-friendly options like burgers, brats, Italian sausage, and bacon all day long. The station also provides essential hydration with Skratch Electrolyte and standard ultra race fare to keep energy levels up.
Awards are given out for overall top three finishers in each event category as well as special recognition for those who inspire others during the challenge. Relay teams participating in the 6-hour option can compete against each other, swapping bibs and timing chips among team members while engaging in friendly trash talk to keep spirits high.
Each participant receives a custom medal upon completion of their race or relay segment. Additional swag items may be available on the day but details are yet to be finalized.
Local accommodations within 3-5 miles offer convenient lodging options for out-of-town visitors looking to make this an extended weekend adventure in Florida's scenic surroundings.
