Othnesbery’s Revenge Half Marathon MMXXVI invites runners to experience one of North Yorkshire's most challenging yet rewarding trail races. Now entering its sixth year, this half marathon is set against the stunning backdrop of the North York Moors National Park and features a course that will test even the toughest competitors. The race starts promptly at 08:45 AM after registration opens at 08:00 AM in the car park below Roseberry Topping. Participants must carry essential gear, including waterproof clothing with taped seams (unless Paramo), emergency bivvy bag, compass, and a minimum of 500 ml of fluid along with 120 grams of emergency food. The route spans approximately 13.1 miles through forest tracks and heather-clad moorlands that burst into vibrant purple hues during August, making for an unforgettable visual experience. The highlight is the ascent up Roseberry Topping—more famously known as Othnesbery in ancient Norse lore—and its descent three times over. This iconic hill’s distinctive profile has made it a landmark of historical and cultural significance, with links to Odin, chief of the Norse Gods. Runners will encounter steep ascents and descents that challenge physical endurance while also providing breathtaking views. The race includes a checkpoint where participants can restock on essentials such as water, fizzy drinks, snacks, and sweets before continuing their journey through this picturesque terrain. Upon completing the course within five hours, each finisher receives a bespoke medal designed especially for Othnesbery’s Revenge. This year's design will be unveiled in 2027, adding an element of anticipation to future events. For those interested in capturing memories or learning more about previous races, SilverBackTrails' website and Facebook page feature extensive photo galleries and drone footage showcasing the route and its stunning landscapes. Additionally, runners who wish can purchase a race-specific technical T-shirt from the SummitCrazy club shop for £18. Participants are reminded that dogs are welcome but must be kept on a lead throughout the event. Parking is available in the designated car park below Roseberry Topping, though participants cover any associated charges themselves. Organized by SilverBack Trails and led by Adrian Martin, this race promises an authentic trail running experience with a rich historical context.
