About the Event

The Shanghai Marathon stands as an elite international road race celebrated annually in China’s bustling metropolis. Renowned for its World Athletics Platinum Label, the highest accolade in long-distance running events, it draws top-tier athletes and enthusiastic amateurs from around the globe. This prestigious event is a key contender for inclusion in the Abbott World Marathon Majors series, featuring world-class competition on a swift course that meanders through Shanghai’s renowned landmarks.
The marathon's status as an international landmark race is underscored by its breathtaking urban setting, which immerses runners and spectators alike in the city’s vibrant atmosphere. With 45,000 participants each year – including 23,000 full marathon competitors and another 15,000 fitness run entrants – the event exemplifies both elite competition and widespread public enthusiasm.
The race's overwhelming popularity is reflected in its highly selective nature; for instance, only 7.2% of applicants secured a spot in the 2025 edition, making entry into this iconic city marathon one of the most coveted achievements in long-distance running.
Travel packages are available exclusively to international runners wishing to guarantee their participation through a lottery system.

About Shanghai

Learn more about the host city, Shanghai.

Shanghai is the most developed city in China, the country's main center for finance and fashion, and one of the world's most populous and important cities. Shanghai is a fascinating mix of East and West. It has historic shikumen (石库门) houses that blend the styles of Chinese houses with European design flair, and it has one of the richest collections of Art Deco buildings in the world. There were concessions controlled by Western powers in the late 19th and early 20th century, so many neighbourhoods have buildings in various Western styles.
