Runners-next-the-Sea 5-mile Beach Race

The fifth edition of the Runners-next-the-Sea 5-mile Beach Race is set to take place on January 3, 2027, offering runners an exhilarating journey along Holkham's stunning coastline. This race, which has become a beloved annual event, sees participants navigating approximately five miles across the pristine sands and dunes of this National Nature Reserve.
The route starts at Holkham Gap, just a short walk from Lady Anne’s Drive car park, where runners will be greeted by marshals who direct them to the starting area. The race begins promptly at 9:30 am after a briefing at 9:25 am, ensuring all participants are fully informed about safety and course details.
Runners can expect an adventure that takes them westward behind the sand dunes towards Burnham Overy Staithe before heading east along the open beach for approximately two miles. The route then loops back to the finish line at Holkham Gap, with runners crossing a shallow channel en route. The entire course is clearly marked and supported by numerous marshals who ensure safety and provide guidance.
Participants are encouraged to arrive early to register in the Lookout Café located at the Beach End of Lady Anne’s Drive. Registration opens at 8:15 am and closes promptly at 9:00 am, allowing ample time for runners to collect their race numbers complete with chip timing tags before heading out on the course.
For those traveling by car, there is an abundance of parking available at Lady Anne's Drive Car Park, where a £3.80 charge applies until noon (2026 prices subject to change). Additional facilities such as toilets and refreshments are located near The Lookout Café and in nearby Holkham village.
Post-race festivities include complimentary drinks from The Lookout café for runners looking to refuel after their run. Awards will be presented to the top three male and female finishers, while all participants receive a special memento commemorating their achievement.
Safety is paramount at this event; therefore, no littering or running with dogs or pushchairs is allowed. First aid support will also be available should any injuries occur during the race.
Runners are advised to dress appropriately for January conditions and stay updated on weather forecasts leading up to the race day. The organizers recommend checking their website and social media pages regularly for updates, as well as ensuring they have completed all necessary medical information on the back of their race numbers.
Should unforeseen circumstances lead to a cancellation, full refunds will be issued; however, no deferrals or transfers are allowed once registration closes unless done through Total Race Timing by midnight on December 26, 2026.
