Kick off your racing season with an unforgettable experience at the Nigel Barge Memorial 10k, hosted by Maryhill Harriers on Sunday, January 17, 2027. This prestigious race honors the legacy of Nigel Barge, a remarkable officer who tragically lost his life in Dunkirk during World War II. The event has been an annual tradition since its inception in 1943 and continues to celebrate the rich athletic heritage of Glasgow.
The race begins at Garscube Sports Complex (G20 0SP), located within the scenic grounds of Garscube Estate, offering runners a picturesque route that winds through surrounding roads. The course is designed as two laps around the Garscube Kelvin Campus estate and includes both flat stretches and challenging inclines, such as the famous Vet School hill climb.
Registration for this event takes place at the Sports Complex from 10:30 am to 11:40 am on race day, allowing ample time for participants to collect their numbers and prepare. Changing facilities are available inside the sports center, where runners can also leave personal belongings securely but at their own risk.
Parking is limited near the start line, so it's recommended that participants park in nearby Todd Campus Science Park (G20 0XA) or surrounding streets, which offer ample space within walking distance of both the registration area and starting point. Please avoid private business car parks inside Kelvin Campus and any areas with double yellow lines for safety reasons.
Entry fees are £16 for Scottish Athletics League members and £18 for others. The route is entirely on tarmac paths and roads, requiring runners to exercise caution as traffic will not be closed along the course. Marshals will provide guidance throughout the race, ensuring a safe experience despite open road conditions.
Awards include top male and female finishers receiving cash prizes of up to £70, with second and third place earning £40 and £30 respectively. Teams of four also compete for team awards worth £60 each, while age group winners receive vouchers from SportShoes.com. The 'King and Queen of the Hill' title is awarded based on who reaches the summit of Vet School hill first.
All participants will be timed using ProTays chip technology, ensuring immediate results upon crossing the finish line. Finishers can look forward to a medal, fresh fruit, and water at the end. Post-race festivities include complimentary tea, coffee, and home baking treats in the Sports Centre for runners and spectators alike, making it a day of celebration.
