Massanutten Mountain Trails 100M and 100K

Set against the rugged backdrop of Virginia’s Shenandoah Valley, the Massanutten Mountain Trails (MMT) 100 Mile and 100K ultramarathons challenge runners with some of the most demanding terrain on the East Coast. Held annually in May, these races offer a unique blend of technical trails, steep climbs, and unpredictable weather conditions that keep even seasoned trail runners on their toes.
The course winds through the Massanutten Mountains, known for its rocky, uneven paths and relentless elevation changes. The 100-mile race, in particular, features over 18,000 feet of climbing, making it one of the toughest ultramarathons in the region. Runners can expect to navigate narrow single-track trails that twist through dense forests and along ridgelines with stunning views.
While May typically brings cooler temperatures compared to Virginia’s sweltering summer months, participants must be prepared for sudden weather changes such as heavy rain or severe thunderstorms. Despite these challenges, MMT is renowned for its well-stocked aid stations, friendly volunteers, and clear course markings that ensure runners receive the support they need throughout the race.
The Massanutten Mountain Trails 100 Mile and 100K offer an unparalleled adventure through some of Virginia’s most beautiful wilderness areas. Whether you’re a seasoned ultrarunner or taking on your first major trail challenge, this event promises to test both body and spirit in one of America's premier mountainous settings.
