Le Marathon de la Loire

The Loire Marathon at Saumur offers an array of races along the picturesque banks of the Loire River. The marathon course spans 42.195 kilometers with minimal elevation gain, winding through UNESCO-listed landscapes that offer breathtaking views and a serene atmosphere. This race is part of the national Silver Label series and serves as a qualifier for French championships, attracting over 7,000 runners each year.
The semi-marathon covers 21 kilometers on equally flat terrain along the riverbank, ideal for those aiming to set personal bests or simply enjoy the scenic beauty. With an anticipated turnout of around 6,000 participants, this race is a perfect blend of challenge and enjoyment.
For something unique, runners can take part in the Canoe + Run event, which combines water sports with road racing. This innovative competition starts with a 12-kilometer descent down the Loire River followed by a rigorous 17-kilometer run to Saumur, all completed as a duo team.
On the day before the main events, Saturday features two shorter races: a 5 km and a 10 km course. Both routes offer participants an opportunity to explore parts of the charming town and its surroundings at a more relaxed pace.
Throughout these various distances, runners will enjoy regular hydration stations, medical support, and lively entertainment every kilometer along the way. Upon completion, all finishers receive commemorative medals and souvenir jackets, while marathon completions come with an additional special gift – a bottle of wine from local vineyards.
