Isle of Wight Cross Country Championship

On February 28, 2027, runners converge at Smallbrook Stadium in Ryde to compete in the Isle of Wight Cross-Country Championship. This annual race, hosted by Ryde Harriers, offers a challenging and scenic course that winds through picturesque landscapes on the island.
Registration for this year's event opens early on February 18th with online entry preferred until midnight on February 25th to streamline day-of operations. The registration fee is £10 regardless of affiliation status. On race day, participants can register from 10:00 at Smallbrook Stadium’s top floor before the start time of 11:00.
The course itself combines rugged terrain and open roads, with a significant portion traversing fields marked by arrows and tape for guidance. Runners should be prepared to navigate two road crossings without carpeted safety zones, requiring heightened awareness around traffic and railway lines. Cross-country spikes or trail/fell shoes are recommended due to the varied surface conditions.
After crossing the finish line at Smallbrook Stadium, runners can enjoy post-race amenities including changing facilities on the ground floor and refreshments from the bar area. The venue offers limited free parking with car-sharing encouraged for those traveling together by ferry.
In addition to personal achievement, participants compete in various age categories and team events, earning medals based on their performance. Special prizes are awarded to the closest nominations in both men’s and women's divisions through the Arthur Biggs Trophy competition.
Safety guidelines emphasize avoiding distractions from headphones (bone-conducting models allowed) and prohibit running with dogs. For those traveling by ferry from Portsmouth, Wightlink offers direct catamaran sailings that take approximately 35 minutes to reach Ryde Esplanade, just a short walk away from the stadium.
