The Ilkley Skyline, established in 2013 by North Leeds Fell Runner Mike Ayers, is a challenging and scenic fell running route that winds through some of Yorkshire's most rugged terrain. Spanning 22 miles with an elevation gain of over 3,000 feet (914 meters), the race takes runners on a loop from Burley Woodhead to Ilkley Moor and Rombalds Moor, covering at least eight distinct moors along the way. The route starts and finishes at The Hermit in Burley Woodhead. It includes iconic landmarks such as Beamsley Beacon, Round Hill, and numerous summits across Burley Moor, Ilkley Moor, and Rombalds Moor. Most of the course consists of fell or field running with some short road sections, including a notable climb from the river at stepping stones back to The Hermit. Runners will encounter two aid stations along their journey: one in Addingham (14 kilometers) and another near Timble (25 kilometers). These checkpoints are essential for refueling and rehydrating during this demanding route. Navigation is crucial, as the course is unmarked; participants should bring a detailed map or GPS file to navigate successfully. The Ilkley Skyline Half offers an alternative 21km point-to-point challenge from Addingham suspension bridge to The Hermit, following the same spectacular terrain but in a shorter distance format. Runners for this half will be transported from The Hermit to Addingham once the main race has started. With its combination of breathtaking scenery and technical challenges, the Ilkley Skyline is not just a race but an adventure through Yorkshire's wild moors. Whether you're seeking personal challenge or simply enjoying the beauty of the landscape, this event promises an unforgettable experience for fell runners everywhere.
