The Elkhorn Endurance Runs, nestled in Montana's historic Elkhorn Mountains, offer runners an unforgettable challenge on rugged terrain. This trail ultra is known as the state’s oldest endurance race, featuring steep climbs and technical single-track trails that span 75% of the course. The remaining quarter consists of primitive jeep roads and a mile or two of maintained dirt Forest Service road. The 50-mile route ascends an impressive 13,400 feet with breathtaking alpine vistas, historical ghost towns, and cemeteries along the way. Wildlife sightings are common as runners navigate through pristine wilderness teeming with deer, elk, moose, bear, coyote, mountain goats, and other wild creatures. Race day begins early at Willard Creek Trailhead on Forest Service Road 4014, with packet pickup available in Montana City for those who prefer to arrive earlier. The start times are set for a challenging morning: the full marathon kicks off at 5:00 am, followed by the half marathon at 8:00 am. Aid stations are well-stocked and accessible via ATVs, horsepacks, and human power, ensuring runners have ample support throughout their journey. Spectators often hike to Teepee Creek Aid Station for a chance to cheer on runners in the final stretch of the race. Upon crossing the finish line, participants receive custom-designed swag including prints by race director John Hallsten and other unique gifts. The post-race atmosphere is warm and inviting, with food, drinks, and plenty of opportunities to share stories around campfires or at local eateries. The Elkhorn Endurance Runs are organized entirely by volunteers from the Helena Ultra Runners League (HURL), a nonprofit dedicated to supporting community-driven initiatives like high school cross-country scholarships and donations to local organizations. These efforts help maintain vital trails in partnership with the Helena Lewis and Clark National Forest, ensuring that future runners can experience this legendary race. Participants should be prepared for remote conditions and variable weather patterns, as safety measures may necessitate changes or cancellations based on seasonal fire restrictions and smoke advisories.
