The Thrill in the Hills Trail Running Race returns for its 20th edition on February 27, 2027, inviting runners to explore Fort Yargo State Park's scenic trails. This year’s race offers three distances: a challenging 50K (31 miles), a half marathon at 21 kilometers (13.1 miles), and a shorter yet exhilarating 5-mile course. Registration for the event opens on September 23, 2026, with packet pick-up available from 6:00 to 7:00 AM for 50K runners; 6:00 to 7:30 AM for half marathon participants; and 6:00 to 7:30 AM for the 5-mile race. The start times are set at 7:30 AM, 8:00 AM, and 8:15 AM respectively. The 50K course is a rigorous journey through varied terrain including rolling hills, single-track paths, double tracks, and technical sections filled with roots. Runners will complete two laps plus an additional five-mile loop that showcases the park’s diverse landscapes. The race begins on paved streets before transitioning into dense woods where runners can truly immerse themselves in nature. For those preferring a team effort, relay options are available for both 2-person and 3-person teams. Each participant must run at least one leg of the course, ensuring no single runner bears too much burden while still experiencing the thrill of the trail. The half marathon follows similar terrain but covers just one lap through the park’s meticulously maintained trails. The route begins on a short stretch of road before diving into an enchanting network of woodland paths and technical sections that challenge even seasoned runners. Completing the lineup, the 5-mile race offers a taste of what lies ahead for those new to trail running or seeking a shorter adventure. Starting with a brief stint along Wil A Way Road, participants quickly transition onto single-track trails weaving through Fort Yargo’s natural beauty. Aid stations are strategically placed throughout each course: at 1.5 miles near the road crossing; around the cabins and campground host area after five miles; in the primitive camping region at nine-and-a-half miles; and just outside the Nature Center Pavilion, where runners will find essential supplies to aid their journey through this challenging yet rewarding race. Join us for a day of adventure, breathtaking scenery, and unforgettable trail running experiences. The Thrill in the Hills Trail Running Race promises an escape from urban life into Georgia’s lush wilderness.
