About the Event

The Flannagan Cup Open Water Swim, scheduled for February 6, 2027, at Ngamotu Beach in Taranaki, promises to be an unforgettable experience. This iconic race has been part of the local calendar since 1916 and offers a variety of categories catering to swimmers of all ages and skill levels.
The main event is the Flannagan Cup with a distance of approximately 3.6 kilometers (three laps), open to participants aged 14 years and over. Swimmers can compete for trophies in various age groups, including under-16, open category, over-30, and over-60 divisions. The event also features unique awards such as the first non-wetsuit swimmer home and a sealed handicap trophy.
For younger swimmers, there's the Swimming Taranaki Relay Race starting at 9:40 am with teams of three members each completing one lap (200m) per swimmer. Additionally, newcomers can participate in the Give-it-a-go event at 9:20 am for a shorter but equally engaging experience.
Registration is available on February 5th from 6:00 to 7:00 pm at the New Plymouth Yacht Club or before race day up until 30 minutes prior to each start time. Swimmers will enjoy breathtaking views of Mt Taranaki and the beautiful west coast setting, making this event a must for both local enthusiasts and international visitors.
With its rich history and diverse categories, the Flannagan Cup offers something special for every open water swimmer looking to challenge themselves against stunning natural scenery.
