Ngamotu Beach on February 6, 2027, will host the Flannagan Cup Open Water Swim, an iconic race that has been part of Taranaki’s aquatic tradition since 1916. Nestled along the stunning west coast with Mt Taranaki as a breathtaking backdrop, this event attracts both seasoned swimmers and newcomers alike. The day kicks off early at 8:00 am with the Flannagan Cup, an 3.6 km (approximately) swim consisting of three laps around Ngamotu Beach. Swimmers will compete in various age categories for trophies including Under 16 years old, Open (all ages), Over 30 years old, and Over 60 years old. Additionally, there are special awards for the first non-wetsuit competitor and a sealed handicap trophy for those who have participated in previous editions. For swimmers seeking an extended challenge without committing to the full distance, the 2.4 km Middle Distance Race offers two laps around the course starting at the same time as the Flannagan Cup. Trophies will be awarded to the fastest male and female competitors in this category. The event also features a range of shorter races designed for all ages and abilities. The Give-it-a-go 400m race, ideal for newcomers or those returning after some time away from open water swimming, begins at 9:20 am. Meanwhile, the Swimming Taranaki Relay Race starts at 9:40 am with teams of three members each completing a lap. Registration is available on Friday, February 5th, from 6:00 to 7:00 pm at the New Plymouth Yacht Club or online before race day for early bird pricing. On-the-day registration will incur an additional late entry fee.
