The Burnley Way Ultra and Off-Road Marathon
On September 25, 2027, runners will gather at Finsley Gate Wharf in Burnley, Lancashire for the challenging Burnley Way Ultra and its companion race, the Off-Road Marathon. Both events are designed to test endurance on a diverse course that traverses moorland, towpaths, fields, and hills along The Burnley Way.
The ultra event spans 39.1 miles (64km) with an elevation gain of 5751 feet (1753m). Runners will navigate through rugged terrain marked by picturesque landscapes and challenging climbs. Participants can choose to compete solo or pair up for the team relay, but all runners must be at least 20 years old.
For those seeking a more manageable yet still formidable challenge, the Off-Road Marathon covers 26.7 miles (43km) with an elevation gain of 4420 feet (1347m). This race also offers both solo and paired options for runners to explore The Burnley Way's varied terrain.
Both races provide detailed course descriptions, marked maps, and GPX files to help participants prepare. While the route is signposted along parts of The Burnley Way, it’s highly recommended that competitors familiarize themselves with the area beforehand through reconnaissance runs or training sessions.
To ensure safety on this demanding course, each runner must carry essential kit including full waterproof clothing (top and bottom), a hat, gloves, a compass, whistle, emergency food, and a map. These items are crucial for navigating unpredictable weather conditions and ensuring preparedness in case of emergencies.
